I love Lexington with it's sense of history, diversity, and big time University culture. In fact, that's probably a good place to start. If you've never lived in a city with a major University you may not appreciate the impact that it has on everyday life. In some respects, it seems similar to the way Green Bay is dominated by the Packers, Austin by the University of Texas.
Everybody knows it as UK. It creates jobs with over 17000 employees and serves as a magnet attracting new business to the Lexington area. It adds culture with it's Art Museum, Theater, and Opera. And of course there's basketball where the Wildcats have won more games than any other Division 1 team. "How bout them Wildcats," is a popular greeting. UK is the dominant provider of Healthcare and UK Hospital has been recognized as one of the nation's best hospitals by Thomson Healthcare.
We have many lovely homes in all styles and price ranges. One of the first things you will discover if you are new to this area, is how wonderfully affordable they are, particularly when compared with most other parts of the Country. For starters, check out My Listings and spend some time Searching the MLS for your perfect home.
Lexington is also home to Transylvania University, a small but excellent liberal arts school, that's been around since 1780. Did you know that Jefferson Davis went to Transylvania as a student long before becoming President of the Confederacy. Now that's a piece of American history!
You have no idea, or maybe you do, how important horses are in this part of the world. They are not only the biggest industry and number one agricultural cash crop but also the greatest tourist attraction whether you're looking to buy a horse, bet on one, or simply enjoy them. There is nothing like a Spring day driving through the countryside, horse farm after horse farm, and seeing thoroughbreds rollicking through the fields. Some fun!
Rich In History and, yet, very cosmopolitan in it's outlook, Lexington is centrally located in Kentucky, about eighty miles south of Cincinnati, Ohio and within fairly easy driving distance of many Midwestern cities. The downtown area is a nice size, not too congested, and traffic flows smoothly to many of the lovely surrounding neighborhoods, as can be seen in the top picture on the right. Rupp Arena, named after famous basketball coach Adolph Rupp and shown from a distance in the middle picture on the right, is a major structure in the downtown area.
The bottom picture was taken at one of the major downtown Lexington intersections, Main and Broadway, and focuses on one of many historic buildings in the area, this one the home of
de'Sha's Restaurant, one of my favorites. A short drive and you will find Gratz Park surrounded by antebellum homes. Gratz is one of more than a hundred parks comprising over 4000 acres in the city. Another lovely old area, southeast of downtown, is the Ashland neighborhood, which grew out of the estate of 19th-century Kentucky statesman, Henry Clay. Farther South, many newer neighborhoods can be found, and a particularly nice one is Hartland, which I am currently featuring on this website.
Today, Lexington is a thriving community with a mild four season climate and a diverse economy with many job opportunities. Homes are generally quite affordable by national standards and we do have buying and selling activity. This housing market represents a marvelous opportunity for first time buyers and for those relocating from some of the more overpriced parts of the Country, particularly retirees looking for a happy change of scene.
